US Airways: 100% bonus when buying miles
on August 9th, 2011 at 9:02 pmI don’t normally recommend buying miles. Mathematically the value of the mile that is purchased outweighs the price of paying for the actual ticket. There are two exceptions to that theory, one being when you are very close to an award flight and do not have enough time to earn the remaining points. The other is when the airline is offering a strong bonus like the one being offered right now by US Airways. The bonus is essentially a 100% match bonus as they are offering 10,000 bonus miles for 10,000 miles purchased. There is a cap of 50,000 bonus miles and you must purchase them in even ten-thousands. (IE, 29,000 mile purchased only pays 20,000 bonus miles opposed to 30,000 miles paying 30,000 bonus miles). The price per mile before the bonus is 2.75 cents per mile, so the bonus effectively lowers the price to 1.38 cents per mile. If you plan to use these rewards for domestic travel, this probably isn’t the best value for you as maxing out the promotion would cost $1,375 for 4 plane tickets ($343 each). You could redeem these flights for international flights in business class, which makes it a great deal. You need 100,000 miles for a flight to Europe in business class. Business class flights to Europe generally run more than $3,000. As mentioned previous, if you are close to reward travel this is also a good bonus. Keep in mind, US Airways is part of the Star Alliance so you can also redeem reward travel with US Airways Dividend Miles on other airlines in the alliance such as United, Continentalm Lufthansa, Air China and many more.
